Baku, November 14, AZERTAC

Pakistan said that seven of its soldiers were killed by Indian gunfire across the disputed border in the Kashmir region Monday, in a development likely to further raise tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors, according The Wall Street Journal.

Pakistan’s military said that “unprovoked firing” across the de facto border in Kashmir, known as the Line of Control, caused the deaths. Pakistani soldiers responded by shooting at Indian border posts, according to a statement from the Pakistani military.

There was no immediate comment from India. A spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs couldn’t immediately be reached.

The Pakistani government says firing by Indian forces across the border has killed 26 Pakistani civilians in the past two months and injured 107.

New Delhi and Islamabad have also accused each other’s diplomats of espionage and subversive activities in recent weeks. A Pakistani diplomat was expelled by India last month, and Islamabad responded in a tit-for-tat expulsion of an Indian diplomat.
